For Immediate Release
New Electronics Recycling Program Coming August 1st
Manitoba’s new end-of-life electronic stewardship program will begin on August 1, 2012.
The Electronic Products Recycling Association Manitoba (EPRA Manitoba) is an
industry-led, non-profit association that will uphold the industry’s high standards for the
recycling of end-of-life electronics and providing secure, convenient recycling options
across the province. This transition from the Green Manitoba program will still ensure
the responsible, safe and secure recycling Manitobans have come to expect. By utilizing
an extended producer responsibility approach, Manitobans will soon be able to
participate in a more comprehensive electronics recycling program.
The accepted electronics will be expanded beyond the residential sector to include all
regulated electronics within the province, whether they are generated from individuals,
businesses or other organizations. The program will accept a similar list of electronics
as other industry-led stewardship programs across Canada.
In order to provide Manitobans with a sustainable program, EPRA Manitoba will utilize
an Environmental Handling Fee (EHF) on the purchase of new, regulated electronic
products. The EHF reflects the actual cost to collect, transport and responsibly recycle
the regulated products. These fees have been harmonized with those utilized by the
neighbouring Saskatchewan Waste Electronic Equipment Program (SWEEP). The use
of EHFs is consistent with similar regulated, industry-led environmental stewardship
programs in Manitoba.
